These bills introduce a range of 2014 budget measures in the Social Services portfolio. Under these budget welfare reforms, the government will continue to provide assistance for families, seniors, people with disability, carers and those most in need. Importantly, we are targeting assistance towards supporting the most vulnerable Australians while encouraging those who are able to work or study to do so. Our welfare system must be fair, but it also must be sustainable. The budget measures introduced by these bills will help make our welfare system strong for the future. I commend the bills to the House.

Pursuant to the resolution agreed to earlier, I will now put the question on the Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (2014 Budget Measures No.1) Bill 2014 and the related bill. The question is that these bills be now read a second time.
